Understanding the Levels

What Are Level 1 & Level 2 Support Coordination?

The NDIS offers two levels of support coordination under the Capacity Building budget. Understanding the difference helps you make the most of your NDIS plan.

Level 1 — Support Connection

For participants who need help getting started

Level 1 Support Connection is designed to help you understand and use your NDIS plan. It focuses on building your ability to connect with informal, community, and funded supports — so you can start working toward your goals.

Level 2 — Support Coordination

For participants with more complex support needs

Level 2 Support Coordination goes deeper — it supports you to design and build your support system, resolve points of crisis, and develop the skills and resilience to live more independently over time.

Our Role

What Your Support Coordinator Does

An NDIS Support Coordinator is your dedicated guide through the NDIS system. They work alongside you to ensure your plan is fully understood, properly implemented, and working as hard as it can to help you reach your goals.

At Safe & Sound, our coordinators don’t just make phone calls — they build genuine relationships with participants and their families, working collaboratively to solve problems and create lasting positive change.

“My coordinator helped me understand exactly what my plan covered and connected me with services I never knew I could access. It changed everything.”

Making the Right Choice

How to Choose the Right Support Coordination Provider

Choosing the right provider makes a significant difference to how effectively your NDIS plan works for you. Here are the key things to consider.

Assess Your Personal Goals and Needs

Understanding your specific situation helps you select the coordination level that aligns best with your goals — whether that's building independence, accessing services, or navigating complexity.

Consult a Registered Coordinator

A qualified NDIS support coordinator can provide tailored advice based on your particular situation and help you understand which level of support is most suitable for your needs.

Consider Long-Term Plans and Changes

Select a support level and provider that can adapt to your future goals and any potential changes in your life, health, or NDIS plan — not just your current situation.

Use Available Support Networks

Don't forget to use the resources at your disposal — support networks, online guides, NDIS LAC (Local Area Coordinators), and other information sources offer valuable guidance.

Consider Your Financial Situation

It's crucial to select a provider that meets your needs and works within your NDIS budget. Ensure you understand how coordination fees are charged and what's included.

Check Registration and Quality Standards

Always choose an NDIS-registered provider. This ensures they meet the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission standards and are accountable for the quality of support they provide.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Specialist Support Coordination

Q

What is the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 Support Coordination?

Level 1 (Support Connection) focuses on helping you understand and use your NDIS plan and connect with services. Level 2 (Support Coordination) provides a higher level of support — helping you design your support system, resolve complex issues, coordinate multiple providers, and build long-term independence.

Q

How do I know if I'm eligible for Support Coordination?

Support Coordination must be funded in your NDIS plan under the Capacity Building — Support Coordination budget. The NDIS determines eligibility during your planning meeting. If you don’t currently have it funded, contact us — we may be able to help you make the case for it at your next plan review.

Q

Can I change my Support Coordinator if I'm not happy?

Absolutely. Under the NDIS, you have the right to choose and change your providers at any time. Our team will make the transition as smooth as possible and ensure there is no gap in your support during the changeover.

Q

What areas in Sydney do you service?

We primarily service Ashfield and Greater Sydney — including the Inner West, South West Sydney, and surrounding suburbs. Contact us to confirm whether we cover your specific area.

Q

Does my Support Coordinator charge separately from my NDIS plan?

No — Support Coordination fees are paid directly from your NDIS Capacity Building budget, within the rates set by the NDIS Price Guide. You do not pay out of pocket for coordination services.

Q

What is the difference between Support Coordination and Specialist Support Coordination?

Level 1 & 2 Support Coordination is suitable for most NDIS participants. Specialist Support Coordination is a higher level of service designed specifically for participants with very complex needs, significant barriers, or crisis situations requiring more intensive expertise and intervention.
